Looks like an excellent Food Thing.

Unrelated Solar: I bought a panel, charge controller and battery from a guy. Used one time at Burning Man. #notme

Is there a meter that can go in line with the battery when it’s in use to measure amp hours gone out? Also, with the panel connected to the battery via the charge controller, can you have your load hooked up at the same time? And what if the draw should for some (unlikely, if not i m possible because inverter rating) reason exceeded the controller output rating?

Is that tofu in there as well? This honestly looks like a weird take on bibimbap, which is a Korean dish of meat and veggies prepped in various ways, with a fried egg on top (ideally very runny) and seasoned with sesame oil, rice vinegar, and a red pepper paste called gochujang.

or tonkatsu, with some random other stuff thrown in.

though in my area several of the Japanese restaurants have Korean owners, so I wouldn’t be surprised if it was kind of a “Fusion” dish.

MMM katsudon

Edit: Should basically be the best thing ever

Eggs, onion deep fried pork, a little bit of dashi, over rice. Hard to make at your house because you have to make Tonkatsu first.

I see pork katsu, tofu, an egg, some pickled vegetables, seaweed, and rice. Some sort of Japanese donburi (rice bowl) situation? Looks like a great lunch to me.

Also, i will tell you how to make this if you’d like. Its pretty easy once you have tonkatsu ( the fried pork part. ) However, you can get tonkatsu sometimes from a restaurant and then make this with your leftovers.

I’ve seen that, too - it’s not unusual to see both Korean and Japanese cuisines served in the same establishments.

I like my tonkotsu simple - fried pork, a pile of rice, and a pile of salad. I think this plate cost me 1000 yen (so around 12 Canadian rubles) b ut I left so incredibly full:

It was all incredibly delicious, but the thing that still stands out in my mind is the variety of dressings they had for the salad, which was just a pile of shredded cabbage. The dressings tasted fucking incredible.

A tonkotsu bibimbap would be pretty tasty, now that I think about it.

It’s funny to see people slowly coming around to Korean cooking. A lot of people know about Korean BBQ, and bibimbap is becoming more and more popular, but I think most people haven’t even come close to finding the truly tasty stuff.

Definitely nice to see, I hope it comes with an increased tolerance for tofu as well, which is still generally thought of as a meat substitute by most americans. I’d go get some soft tofu soup right now, but its like a billion degrees out, so not today.

There’s probably a more eloquent way of phrasing this, but what white people know as tofu and what asians know as tofu is completely different. Korean tofu stew is spicy, flavourful, and fucking delicious.

The one dish that I really think of is a pork/potato stew that’s also spicy, but once you’ve finished off all the pork potato you make ramen or even a fried rice with the remaining broth.

Oh man that sounds amazing.

I honestly need to explore more Korean food, I had lots of exposure to Chinese food growing up (my family is chinese) and Japanese food (both of my parents lived there for a time and picked up a taste for the cuisine) but Korean food has been something i’ve had to discover on my own, mostly since becoming an adult.

And man , i sure have liked what i’ve found. I t almost reminds me of Japanese food that isn’t ‘self conscious’ if that makes any sense. Japanese food can beat around the bush a little and seems to be averse to heavier flavors a lot of the time, while chinese food sometimes feels almost too chaotic.

I’m of Korean background but still love Japanese cuisine. I’m always hesitant to say that I love Chinese food mainly because most of what I’ve tried is heavily Americanized. However, I do love stuff you get in dim sum and peking duck is lovely. That said, I love North American Chinese food.

I find that there are some similarities between Korean and Japanese food, mainly when it comes to the love of raw fish. Japanese food seems to have less intense flavours , an example is their use of garlic (which is culturally unpopular due to the intense smell/flavour) but Korean food is riddled with garlic. Personally, I think Japanese food looks prettier in general but Korean food is all about big flavours served in family-style portions.

Then again, there is excellent flavour in simplicity and focusing on doing deceptively simple things very well, like tempura or yakitori.

Yup, that’ s a wonderful way of putting it, regarding the differences between Japanese and Korean foods . I’ve grown up loving the taste and aesthetics of Japanese food, but now that i’m an adult i’m finding my actual palate and personality line up more closely with Korean food.

You’re right about Chinese food too, I grew up loving what i considered Chinese food, but when i was in my early 20's i moved to Beijing for a year and people there were like ‘Chinese food means a billion different things, you gotta specify a region man!’ Its almost too expansive to consider a category on its own, though i’d think most Italians would say the same thing.

Chinese-American can be fucking amazing though and Chinese people by and large have an attitude of “if it tastes good, eat it, even if its not traditional. ”So I appreciate authenticity, but I don’t feel bad about my belief that its not a necessity for good chinese food .
